Experiments make up the foundation of the Electronic Lab Notebook in Labguru, and can be created in several ways. New experiments can be created using the default structure, which includes a description, procedure and results section, or they can be made from templates that are pre-populated with information. These two methods are described below.

1. Creating a default experiment in Labguru:

All of the options listed below create a default experiment structure Once created, they can be further edited and configured to fit your research needs.

  • From the Labguru homepage: new experiments can be created from the "New Experiment" on the home page.

  • Within the ELN: under projects and folders using the "New Experiment" button.

  • Within the experiments index page: To do this, go to the to the ELN, then to Experiments, and click the button "New Experiment".

  • From the Sample Basket: If you have added samples to the sample basket, you can create a new experiment by pressing the "New Experiment" button. A new experiment will be created in the desired location, with the a sample element that includes the samples contained in the sample basket.

Once you create a new experiment, Labguru will prompt you to assign the experiment to a project and folder and give the experiment a name.

2. Creating an experiment from a protocol:

To increase reproducibility and efficiency, experiments can also be created from protocols which serve as pre-built templates. For example, if you have created a form in a protocol you are able to populate it in an experiment. If you added sample information to a protocol, you can choose the stock of that sample used for an experiment. If you added equipment in a protocol, you can reserve it in an experiment. Using protocols to start experiments allows labs to build repeatable and standardized processes for their experimental work.

  • Click the three dots next to "New Experiment" and click "Add New Experiment from Protocol".

  • This will prompt you to pick a destination (project and folder) for the new experiment and determine which protocol you would like to use as the template.

  • You can also do this by going to the protocols index page (ELN->Protocols), opening the protocol you would like to use to start the experiment and click "Start Experiment".
