The Protocols module allows you to document your lab's procedures, in Labguru we use them as templates for new experiments.

The protocol page shares its design and functionality with the experiment page but doesn't contain a result section. In the protocol you can document all relevant information such as the procedure steps, reagents, samples, calculations and plate design. When the protocol is used in an experiment the content is copied to the new page but original protocol is not changed.

Add new protocols

  1. Go to "Protocols" under the "e-Notebook" tab and choose to add either "from protocols directory" or create one manually "New protocol"

2. If you already built an experiment that you will perform several times, you can save a copy as protocol, saving you the time of having to re-write a whole procedure.

The new protocol will be placed in your protocols list.

Usage of protocols

  • Starting a New Experiment -  Find the protocol you need to work on and select the option "Start experiment". A pop-up window will open giving you the possibility to choose where to locate the new experiment.

This new experiment will have a copy of the protocol and will allow to use the template, for example if you have designed a form in the protocol you can populate it in the experiment. If you added sample information you can choose the actual stock you used for the specific experiment. In the steps element you can mark steps as completed and start the timer.

  •  Load a protocol into an existing experiment - You can create an experiment that contains multiple protocols by add a protocol as a new section. To do that use the 'Add section' link in between two existing sections of an experiment. Then from the options given, choose 'Load from protocol' and search the desired one from the your protocols list.
